At the very east of Scotland’s most southerly region is Annandale & Eskdale. Bordering the Scottish Borders to the east, Cumbria and the Solway Firth to the south and South Lanarkshire to the north, this region is an ideal hub for anyone commuting to Dumfries, Carlisle, Glasgow or Edinburgh.
There are plenty of towns and villages to choose from if you’re looking to buy a property in this district, the biggest area by far in Dumfries and Galloway. Annandale & Eskdale is 31 miles from north to south, and 18 miles east to west, with a diverse range of landscapes and communities within its boundaries.
Gretna is the first town in Scotland, when travelling north on the M74, and nearby Gretna Green is famous as the location of many elopements. At the northern end of the district is Moffat, a pretty market town which is popular with walkers, thanks to the many hills surrounding the town and its proximity to the Southern Upland Way.
To the east, close to the Scottish Borders and just 8 miles from the Anglo-Scottish border is Langholm, locally referred to as the ‘Muckle Toon’. Not far away is peaceful Samye Ling, the first Centre of Tibetan Buddhism to be established in the west, popular with visitors and locals alike.
Lochmaben and Lockerbie are two hubs to the west of Annandale & Eskdale. Lockerbie gained notoriety through its association with the Pan Am air disaster of 1988, but this quiet town is in a great location for fast trains to Edinburgh, and many of its appealing family houses are built from red sandstone.
