Stewartry is a picturesque area of Dumfries and Galloway, stretching from the rugged beaches of the Solway Coast to the quiet and desolate hills of the Galloway Forest Park in the north. This area of Dumfries and Galloway is perfect for those who prefer a slower pace of life, easy access to the great outdoors, whilst not being too far from local amenities.
The towns of Stewartry all offer a unique character, with close-knit communities, independent shops and up-and-coming restaurants. Kirkcudbright, often called ‘The Artist’s Town’, is home to a plethora of makers, and the annual Kirkcudbright Arts and Crafts Trail offers visitors and residents a glimpse into the studios of painters, photographers, sculptors, printmakers and more. Castle Douglas is another charming Stewartry town with plenty to offer prospective homebuyers, including over 50 local businesses selling food and drink, which has earned it the designation of ‘Food Town’.
To the north of the area, Galloway Forest Park offers three hundred square miles of wild beauty waiting to be explored. The largest forest park in Scotland, one of the highlights is a hike up the Merrick, the highest hill on the Scottish mainland south of Ben Lomond. Referred to as ‘the highlands of the lowlands’, Galloway Forest Park is Scotland in miniature. It’s beautiful during the day but maybe best by night, as it’s the UK’s only designated Dark Skies Park.
