About Wigtownshire

To the far west of Dumfries and Galloway is Wigtownshire, an area with miles of unspoiled coastline, bordered by the Irish Sea to the west and the Solway Firth to the south. Wigtownshire includes the most southerly point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway, from where you can see across to Ireland and the Isle of Man on a clear day.

Wigtown is Scotland’s National Book Town, and plays host to numerous bookshops as well as an annual book festival which welcomes bookworms and authors from far and wide. Dumfries and Galloway’s second-largest town, Stranraer, is located in Wigtownshire. The town offers good transport links to Glasgow and Ayr via train, and the nearby town of Cairnryan is the terminal for ferries to Larne and Belfast in Northern Ireland.
