Dumfries town is the hub of the Dumfries and Galloway region, with approximately 40,000 residents, colloquially known as ‘Doonhamers’. As the focal point of the region, Dumfries is well-served by public transport, including a train station with direct trains to Glasgow and Carlisle, as well as bus links serving the entire Dumfries and Galloway area.
The Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary serves the entirety of the south west of Scotland, with nearly 350 beds, a maternity ward and mental health services. There are numerous highly-rated primary schools within the town, as well as four secondary schools. Scotland’s first multi-institutional university campus was established in the town in 1999, with satellite campuses of the University of Glasgow, University of the West of Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway College all located in the grounds of the former Crichton hospital.
Dumfries has all the facilities of a medium-sized town, whilst also offering easy access to the surrounding countryside. The town is the culinary focal point of the region, with many cafes, restaurants and bars clustered in the town centre. The Robert Burns Centre, an imposing 18th century watermill, houses the town’s arthouse cinema, and there are multiple museums in the town.
For a little adventure, Dumfries is just a short drive from the sandy beaches of the Solway Coast, including Southerness, Sandyhills and Powfoot, as well as Criffel, the highest hill in the region. Dumfries and Galloway is also home to five of Scotland’s famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes, all of which are easily accessible from the town.
Dumfries has been home to many famous residents over the years, including J.M. Barrie, Robert Burns and, more recently, Calvin Harris.
