Generally regarded as quiet and fairly affluent, the semi-rural village of Star of Markinch has an interesting history. It started out as a collection of linen weavers' cottages, built to support the large flax growing and linen weaving industry of Fife in the 17-1800s and the crooked layout of the main street along which most of the housing is situated, reflects its evolution from this into a residential settlement. Another interesting fact is that the schoolhouse was home to the famous Scottish novelist who wrote under the pen name of Annie S. Swan. The village offers primary education and secondary education is available at nearby Glenrothes. The train station is located at nearby Markinch making this an ideal location for the commuter. In addition, there is easy access to the motorway links allowing Dundee, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline and Edinburgh all to be reached within comfortable driving time.
