Generally regarded as quiet and fairly affluent, the semi-rural village of Star of Markinch has an interesting history. It started out as a collection of linen weavers' cottages, built to support the large flax growing and linen weaving industry of Fife in the 17-1800s and the crooked layout of the main street along which most of the housing is situated, reflects its evolution from this into a residential settlement. Another interesting fact is that the schoolhouse was home to the famous Scottish novelist who wrote under the pen name of Annie S. Swan.
