About Ormiston

Ormiston was the first planned village in Scotland and is located on the north bank of the River Tyne.

Local resident, Ruth Clarke tells us all about the village and the nearby area.

The village of Ormiston, within easy reach of Edinburgh, has all the essential amenities such as medical centre, community centre, library, general store, post office and pub and is ideally positioned for a whole range of activities and outings.

On our doorstep are fine country walks and slightly further afield, walkers can choose between the moorland expanses of the Lammermuir Hills and the spectacular beaches and coastal trails which make up part of the 134-mile long John Muir Way.  The long-distance route runs through Belhaven’s spectacular John Muir Country Park, close to the special museum in Dunbar which honours the pioneering Scottish-American conservationist.

Just along the coast from Dunbar lies beautiful North Berwick, with its quaint main shopping street and picturesque harbour, as well as the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre, a must for wildlife enthusiasts with its live camera feeds and seasonal boat trips around the islands.

East Lothian, officially rated the sunniest area of Scotland, is a golfing mecca. Home to Open Championship venue Muirfield, it has 22 courses to suit all levels of play. Known as Scotland’s Golf Coast, it has the world’s finest stretch of links courses including Gullane, Dunbar and North Berwick, but also memorable inland tracks such as Gifford, rated one of the best nine-holers in Scotland, as well as the world’s oldest golf course at Musselburgh Links.

Other unique attractions include The National Museum of Flight with its very own Concorde;  Myreton Motor Museum; conducted tours of Glenkinchie Distillery and visits to Dirleton Castle and Tantallon Castle.

Sometimes it’s good just to chill out and go off exploring to discover some of the area’s characterful towns and villages, to shop or stop for a bite to eat.

Ormiston, with its excellent transport links, is equally well situated for outings to the breathtaking cityscapes, museums, galleries and shops of Scotland’s capital Edinburgh as well as to Leith, home to the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Getting Around

It’s an easy 30-minute drive to Edinburgh city centre.

Local buses run to the capital every half-hour and the trip takes around an hour.  There’s a frequent train service to Edinburgh city centre from nearby Wallyford Station.  Wallyford is about 10 minutes away from Ormiston by bus or car and the train journey takes only 14 minutes.  Cars can be left at the station car park or adjacent free park-and-ride area.
