Lying some 3 miles northeast of Kirkcaldy, Coaltown of Weymss was originally divided into Easter and Wester settlements. The villages grew together during the 1860s when the Wemyss Coal Company created a 'model' mining village for workers at the nearby Bell pit. The semi-detached miners' cottages now form part of a conservation area designated in 1980. The village has a general grocers and primary school. Nearby Kirkcaldy provides more comprehensive amenities including shopping, health and leisure facilities and a mainline railway station. Edinburgh can be reached in around 30 minutes by car.
